Empire Company Limited

Sobeys Inc. and Safeway parent company Empire Company Limited reported on Monday, November 7 that its stores and some of its pharmacies were impacted by an "IT systems issue." Other media are reporting it was in fact a ransomware attack. Several companies, including Maple Leaf Foods, have also reported cybersecurity problems.

Empire says grocery stores remain open to serve customers and are not experiencing significant disruptions at this time. However, some in-store services are functioning intermittently or with a delay. In addition, certain of the company's pharmacies are experiencing technical difficulties in fulfilling prescriptions, but says it "remains committed to the continuity of care of all its pharmacy patients."

Pierre St-Laurent, COO of Empire says the company's "sole focus right now is on getting this problem rectified and we will provide further updates as relevant information becomes available."

While the company is making significant progress in reducing the impact of this disruption, it stated in a press release issued on the morning of Monday, November 7  that it was "unable to determine when all issues affecting its systems will be fully resolved."
