Sobeys is partnering with a Dartmouth, N.S. company that will take a portion of discarded fruits and vegetables from the grocer’s distribution centre in the area and convert it into plant-based protein powders.
Outcast Foods dehydrates the produce and sells it to other companies for use in everything from pet food to snacks.
Sobeys says the partnership will help it reach its goal of reducing food waste by 50 per cent by 2020.
Vittoria Varalli, Sobeys’ chief of staff and vice president of sustainability told CBC news that “it’s important that we work with partners to redirect unsellable but fit for consumption items out of our landfills.”
