The Grocery Foundation is supporting student nutrition through a donation of $475,000 in the form of grants, grocery gift cards, product coupons and vouchers. The donation supports Canadian children affected by COVID-19.
The donation is in addition to company-specific donations made in support of pandemic relief efforts, says Shaun McKenna, executive director of The Grocery Foundation.
"When COVID-19 hit it changed everything for hungry children. Our very dedicated and nimble student nutrition partners had to pivot with school closures. They’re now actively getting these donations to those at risk of being cut off to access to vital nutrition."
Donations from the record-breaking 2020 Toonies for Tummies campaign will flow to schools once they resume in the fall. Foundation sought additional measures to help now, hence the incremental donations.
“Covid and related school closures have amplified food insecurity to alarming levels. The strength of The Foundation lies in its partners. We’re indebted to every company that is playing an active role in our mission to get nutritious foods to healthy kids right now and for the foreseeable future,” adds McKenna.
