A study from Ryerson University in Toronto has identified the nation’s top 100 retailers, and the top five are in the business of selling food products.
The Centre for the Study of Commercial Activity (CSCA) at Ryerson conducted the study, which identified the top 100 Canadian retailers based on estimated retail sales from the 2017 fiscal year.
Topping the list was the Weston Group, at $46.2 billion in sales, reports StyleDemocracy. Weston Group operates 35 retailers, including No Frills, Shoppers Drug Mart and Real Canadian Superstore. Walmart was second, at $32.4 billion, Costco was third at $24.6 billion, Empire Co. Ltd. was fourth at $24.2 billion and Metro was number five at $13.1 billion.
Altogether the top 100 retailers drove $276 billion in retail sales. Each of the top 33 entrants had more than $1 billion in sales.
