With a major blaze burning out of control and forcing evacuations in parts of Northern Ontario, the Sobeys store in Parry Sound organized a huge campaign to send food and supplies to crews fighting the fire.
More than 200 volunteers answered the call for help put out by Sobeys franchise owner Matt Derouin on July 27. Derouin needed the assistance to pack a huge grocery order from firefighting crews the next day. He says he wasn’t sure he’d be able to find enough people to get everything packed and ready to ship in time – but the response was overwhelming and the full order was ready to be flown out on schedule.
“We never could have done it without that help,” Derouin told the Parry Sound North Star. “It had nothing to do with any one particular individual; it was just the whole community coming together. It was nice — really nice.”
The “Parry Sound 33” fire is still listed as out of control, and Derouin says he expects further top-up orders will be coming in to follow up on the big initial order.
