A newly opened Zehrs grocery store in Kitchener, ON, manages to match increased size and selection with a focus on local markets – an increasingly common trend in the grocery business.
The new store, at 50,000 square feet, dwarfs the 19,000 square foot 1970s-era store that it is replacing. But in spite of the vastly larger floor space, notes a CBC News report, the larger store takes its cue from small artisanal stores that are now competing for grocery customers – in addition to large businesses like Walmart and Shoppers Drug Mart.
The new store caters its selection to local demographics, including food that reflects the cultures of local residents. The new store has a more streamlined design, with a sushi bar an expanded range of fresh deli sandwiches and pizzas, the full line of 32 Zehrs house salads, and more healthy and organic options. The butcher also has a decidedly local flavour, with many of the usual self-service cases no longer in evidence.
The store is also located close to dense population concentrations and new housing developments, which enhances the ‘walkability” of local communities. The new store also offers online ordering and pickup.
