Walmart plans to add more than 2,000 full- and part-time tech jobs in 2018.
Most of the new positions will be at the company’s Bentonville, Arkansas headquarters. Other locations are San Bruno and Sunnyvale, Calif.; Reston, Va.; and Bangalore, India. Most of the new hires will be data scientists, engineers and project managers.
About 6000 technologists work at Walmart’s technology division, Walmart Labs, on developing systems and solutions to be deployed in the company’s stores and online.
The main impetus for the hiring surge is the company’s push to expand its online grocery business.
For 2018, only Amazon has plans for more tech hires than Walmart: a total of 6000 in Vancouver, BC, Boston and Ireland.
