Walmart

Walmart has opened a small-size supermarket in China loaded with “smart retail” features such as smartphone based payment and online order delivery.

The store is located in Shenzhen and stocks 8,000 items, 90 per cent of which will be available online. Customers can opt to pay by smartphone using an app on Tencent’s WeChat messaging service. Purchases can be delivered within a 2-kilometre radius of the store in as quickly as half an hour.

Walmart previously tried opening small-format stores in the US, but the concept didn’t catch on and the stores were shut down in 2016.
