Walmart has partnered with Microsoft Corp. in order to use the latter’s cloud services, Reuters reports.
Interpreted as a response to Amazon’s retail advances and its increasing inroads into e-commerce and automation, the five year partnership will leverage the full range of Microsoft’s cloud solutions, including Microsoft Azure cloud computing service and Microsoft 365, to make shopping faster and easier for customers, Walmart said.
Walmart and Microsoft engineers will collaborate to migrate a significant portion of walmart.com and samsclub.com to Azure.
Microsoft is developing technology that would eliminate cashiers and checkout lines from stores. The technology would help retailers keep pace with the Amazon Go automated store format.
