Walmart plans to roll out its meal kit offering to 2000 stores this year.
Walmart is leveraging its bricks and mortar presence and offering a subscription-free model to compete with established meal kit players like Blue Apron and Hellofresh, which have struggled with a complex and expensive subscription-based business model.
The announcement is specific to Walmart US. When asked if there were also plans for Canada, Walmart Canada spokesperson Felicia Fefer told Grocery Business that the company’s Supercentres already offer meals to go, including rotisserie chicken, lasagna, chicken parmesan, pizza, etc. as well as sides such as rice pilaf and potatoes.
“We continue to expand our meals to go offering, and customers can expect to enjoy some new menu options in the coming months,” Fefer said.
