Walmart US plans to require suppliers of leafy greens to use blockchain tracing technology by September 30 of next year.
The company has teamed up with suppliers and IBM to provide a tracing solution that uses blockchain security technology.
“All fresh leafy greens suppliers are expected to be able to trace their products back to farm(s) (by production lot) in seconds – not days,” the company said in a statement reported by Greenhouse Canada. “To do this, suppliers will be required to capture digital, end-to-end traceability event information using the IBM Food Trust network.”
Greenhouse Canada reports that a Walmart Canada representative said the company is also looking at blockchain for its Canadian operations.
