The Beer Store is fighting plans by Ontario’s Conservative government to cancel a contract that gives it a near-monopoly on beer sales in the province.
The ten-year Master Framework Agreement was signed in 2015 by Ontario’s previous Liberal government and the major brewers that own and operate Beer Store outlets. Ontario’s Conservative Premier Doug Ford wants to cancel the deal so he can make good on a campaign promise to bring beer sales to corner stores.
In a Global News report, The Beer Store says it has already invested more than $100 million to modernize and improve the consumer experience based on the ten-year agreement, and that cancelling the agreement will also force taxpayers to shoulder massive payouts in the form of legal fees and financial penalties.
The United Food and Commercial Workers local representing Beer Store employees also says as many as 7000 jobs could be lost.
