Nine hundred members of UFCW Local 1400 in Saskatoon are on strike. The workers are protesting a two-tier wage structure that would pay new workers at a lower rate than existing ones. The union says the proposed wage structure would lower wages for women and vulnerable workers. Co-op management says the existing wage structure is unsustainable and hurts the company’s competitiveness.
The two sides haven’t met since last week and no new negotiations have been announced.
On Monday it was reported that a Facebook group set up by Saskatoon Co-op members is seeking 300 signatures to call for a special meeting to remove and replace the nine members of the Co-op board of directors.
