Ocada CEO Tim Steiner says the company plans to invest in driverless technology and robots for grocery delivery.

Steiner made the announcement at the U.S. National Retail Federation (NRF) 2020 Vision: Retail’s Big Show in New York City in January.

According to an online story by IGD, Steiner told attendees that Ocado is looking at “things like driverless technology” and “what jumps out of that vehicle with the groceries and gives them to the customer.”

While many see this as the company’s move towards becoming more of a technology provider rather than just an online retailer, Steiner stated in an NRF online story that at its core, Ocado is still a food business.

“We understand the nature of this business in a way a technology company wouldn’t and couldn’t because they don’t live it and breathe it.”

Ocado made headlines in Canada in 2018 when it announced its partnership with Sobeys. The grocery retailer’s online grocery delivery service called Voilà is set to launch in 2020.
