Where did you grow up? Kitchener, Ont. First job in the biz? 1986, Zehrs Stanley Park Mall, packing bags and collecting carts. Who or what has inspired you? My grandparents and parents taught me the value of hard work and to treat others how you want to be treated. I’ve also been fortunate to work for many exceptional leaders who have afforded me opportunities to learn different parts of the business and grow both as a person and leader. How would you describe yourself? Highly motivated to succeed. Enjoy building team capability. Customer-centric. Innovative. Competitive. Collaborative. Best advice you’ve ever received? Be kind, work hard, stay humble and amazing things will happen. How do you define success? Making a difference in other people’s lives and learning something new every day. Favourite sport/team? Hockey. Toronto Maple Leafs. Favourite business book? It’s Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy. Hobbies? Peloton, road cycling, golf. Favourite vacation destination? St. Lucia and the Amalfi Coast. Favourite TV shows or movies? Anything starring Will Ferrell or Mark Wahlberg. Celebrities you have met? Other than you, I have not met any celebrities. Things to do on your bucket list? Numerous European destinations, the Maldives and Australia. Drive an RV across Route 66. Explore Yosemite, the Yukon and hike the Appalachian Trail. Pet peeve? Poor punctuality. Favourite saying? A small team of A+ players can run circles around a giant team of B and C players (Steve Jobs). Unusual thing that has happened to you? My Dad and I were on a backcountry camping trip by paddle and portage in Algonquin Provincial Park. It was mid-October, and as we set out paddling back to our access point, we faced high winds and huge whitecaps that kept pushing us backwards no matter how hard we paddled. We resorted to lining our canoe in frigid, waist-deep water for many hours to exit North Tea Lake before darkness fell. What would people be surprised to know about you? Food retail is an accidental career for me. I have my Ontario Teachers Certificate; that was the plan many years ago. I feel very lucky with how things have turned out and I wouldn’t change anything!
