Where did you grow up? Hamilton, Ont. First job in the biz? Dominion in Stoney Creek, Ont. I was assisting front-end operations. Who or what has inspired you? First and foremost, my parents, for providing me with the opportunity to grow and learn, especially for what was a new country for them. Today, my grandchildren inspire me every day. Describe yourself: Honest, direct, passionate, competitive and a team player. Best advice you’ve ever received: You only have one reputation. My dad used to say this to me all the time. How do you define success? Being able to sleep well at night. Favourite sport and team? I love playing golf, but hockey is my favourite sport to watch and, of course, the Toronto Maple Leafs are my favourite team. Favourite business book? It’s Your Ship: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy. Hobbies? Golf. Still trying to break the Senior PGA tour ranking. Favourite charity? Ride to Conquer Cancer, among numerous others. Favourite vacation destination? Europe, but especially Tuscany, Italy. Favourite TV shows or movies? Sneak onto the Masters and St. Andrew’s golf courses to play, and also break the Senior PGA tour ranking. Pet peeve: Traffic! The lift bridge going up to let a tugboat through during rush hour is a big mistake! Favourite saying? The only time success comes before work is in the dictionary. Unusual thing that has happened to you? Having the last name Fortino while heading up Metro Ontario. What would people be surprised to know about you? I was a machinist by trade, working at Stelco. They went on strike in 1984 and this kickstarted my career at Fortinos Supermarkets.
