Price declines for all categories except food: StatsCan

Canada’s inflation rate fell to a negative reading in April with all major categories seeing huge price declines with the exception of food, according the latest April figures from Statistics Canada.

The agency says the consumer price index for April fell 0.2 per cent compared with a year ago, the first year-over-year decline since September 2009.

Food prices actually rose by 3.4 per cent overall because of “higher demand for non-perishable food products as consumers were encouraged to limit grocery shopping trips as a result of physical distancing measures,” says Statistics Canada.

Prices for rice, eggs and margarine posted “significant increases” while prices for pork and beef increased by 9 and 8.5 per cent respectively.
