A vegan smoked salmon by B.C. company Save Da Sea Foods Inc. has won the Canadian Health Food Association’s (CHFA) Launchpad contest.

The product was one of eight from entrepreneurs across the country that pitched their product to three industry judges: Shelley King, CEO of Natural Products Canada, Michael Sherwood, CEO of Nature’s Fare Markets and Mary Scianna, editorial director of Grocery Magazine, who, in conjunction with CHFA, sponsored the $20,000 worth of prizes.

The vegan smoked salmon product, made from carrots and includes seaweed to enhance the seafood flavour, is the first to market for Save Da Seafoods and is currently available in 50 retailers across Western Canada. Company founder Aki Kaltenbach says she is planning to scale up to become a global supplier of vegan seafood and is already working on a vegan canned tuna product.
