Walmart hones store pickup, fulfillment model

While Walmart has announced several changes to its in-store delivery and fulfillment model, the company says that it will “keep doing what we’re doing” despite slower than expected fourth quarter e-commerce results, says a report in Shopper Marketing Magazine. president and CEO Marc Lore made the comment at the ShopTalk trade show when he was asked about slowing e-commerce sales.

Among the new changes is the expansion of grocery pickup for online orders to a further 1000 stores this year, bringing the total to more than 2000. Same-day delivery will be rolled out to 100 metropolitan stores.

Walmart plans to roll out in-store “Pickup Towers” to as many as 650 stores by the end of the year. And it plans to concept test its new automated dispensing system for online orders in a Texas store by the end of the year. The system will be integrated directly into the store rather than being run standalone as initially planned.
