A number of Loblaws stores across Ontario and Atlantic Canada experienced a system crash Monday night that left customers unable to use debit cards to pay for their groceries.

The company addressed customer complaints on social media, and posted signs at the entrances to its stores warning customers about the payment issue. Shoppers abandoned shopping carts full of groceries at the checkout, according to media reports.

While Loblaw stores were unable to process debit card payments, they continued to accept cash payments during the outage, and in most cases continued to accept credit card payments, Global News reports.
